District Proclaims Restorative Justice Week

Whereas, in the face of crime or conflict, restorative justice offers a philosophy and approach that views these matters principally as harm done to people and relationships; and

Whereas, this year’s theme for Restorative Justice Week is “Reflections Past, Present and Future”, it is an opportunity to learn about restorative justice, educate and celebrate along with other communities across the country during the week.

Mayor Weeber Proclaims Heritage Week in New Hazelton

To celebrate this year's centennial of both BC Parks and Parks Canada, the Heritage Week 2011 theme is "A Century of Conservation: Parks and Cultural Landscapes."

While British Columbia's parks are renowned for their exceptional natural beauty and world-class recreation opportunities, they also conserve some of our most significant cultural treasures and historic landmarks. One such place is Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park in the Fraser Canyon.

The Alexandra suspension bridge, built in 1926, is a testament to engineering ingenuity and the advent of auto travel. Decades before, another bridge bore the thousands of fortune seekers streaming up the Cariboo Wagon Road to the fabled gold fields of the Interior. And since time immemorial, generations of First Nations have gathered a lifegiving harvest from the waters of the river that carved out the canyon below. We have many reasons to celebrate our heritage and our parks.

Therefore, I, Pieter Weeber, Mayor,

do hereby proclaim February 21-27, 2011

as Heritage Week in the District of New Hazelton

Public Works Notice: Snow Plowing

The Public Works Department is asking residents to pile your snow in your own yard and not on the streets. The snow from the end of your driveway is best piled to the right of the driveway if you are facing out to the street, this way we do not end up plowing it back in. Please park your vehicles off the streets so that we do not have to plow around them leaving a pile of snow on the street. Cleaning ends of driveways is a courtesy we provide and will only be done as we have the time. When we have a snowfall, the first priority is to plow all the streets so that all residents can move about town, then we cleanup snow piles and ridges as time permits. We would like to thank you for your co-operation and patience in advance.

November Proclaimed Adoption Awareness Month by Mayor Weeber

November has been proclaimed as Adoption Awareness Month in British Columbia. In our community and across the province, there are children who need adoptive families. This month provides an opportunity for our respective governments to highlight the need for every child to have a stable, permanent, loving and nurturing home – and acknowledge the many families in the province that have been created through adoption.
Nearly 1,200 children in government care are currently available for adoption. Some of these children are part of a sibling group, some have special needs and some are teens. All of these children deserve to have a family to belong to – someone to help them with their homework, to attend their sports games, and to celebrate their successes, their birthdays and their milestones. Even as adults we continue to look to our families for assistance and encouragement. Families formed through adoption are no different. The bond of a permanent family supports and enriches all family members, now and in the future.
During November, the Ministry of Children and Family Development works to enhance adoption awareness and heighten recruitment efforts to find families for children in continuing care. Potential adoptive parents are ordinary people residing in neighbourhoods in every community. They come from diverse backgrounds and they have a wide range of life experiences. They all share the capacity and commitment to love a child. Single people, married couples and alternative families can all become adoptive parents to a child in need of a loving home.
Therefore, I, Pieter Weeber, Mayor, do hereby proclaim
November 2010 as Adoption Awareness Month
in the District of New Hazelton

Mayor Proclaims October as Foster Family Month

District of New Hazelton

Proclamation

October has been proclaimed Foster Family Month in British Columbia. This year is the 20th Anniversary of Foster Family Month in British Columbia – a time to celebrate fostering and recognize the remarkable contribution foster families make in our communities and in the lives of children, youth and families.

There are approximately 3,400 foster families in British Columbia. Whether they provide emergency, short or long term care, foster families play an invaluable role in the lives of children in British Columbia. Foster parents come from all walks of life. They are our neighbours and colleagues. They have diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds. They bring different life experiences to their role and they have different reasons for doing the work they do. They are ordinary people engaged in extraordinary acts of kindness.

Foster parents help make our communities stronger by providing the foundation a child needs to develop and grow into a confident adult. There is no job more important than that of a parent – biological, adoptive, or foster. To help raise a future generation is a tremendous responsibility. Ongoing support and recognition in the community are vital to show existing families that their efforts are appreciated and to help encourage more people to get involved in fostering.

Therefore, I, Pieter Weeber, Mayor, do hereby proclaim

October 2010 as Foster Family Month

in the District of New Hazelton
